There's Only One Way Chris Evans Would Return To Captain America
It's very hard to let things go sometimes. MCU fans love Chris Evans' version of Captain America, and they don't want him to be done with Marvel films. (By the way, two things can be true at the same time; you can love the Evans version and also love the Anthony Mackie version — which I absolutely, wholeheartedly do — as well. I just want that out there at the start.)
Chris Evans played the role for so long, in so many films, and it's hard to let go, not just of his performance, but of the character's role in our lives. As we know from the trailers for "Thor: Love and Thunder," the next offering in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, two versions of a superhero can exist at the same time, with Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth, another worthy Chris) and the Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman). Could we have a return of the Evans version of Cap with the Mackie version?
It's understandable that fans want to see this, and even more understandable that they're wondering if it could happen. In the world of comics, characters die all the time and come back, one way or another. Just think of the comic run "The Death of Superman." He's not still dead, of course. It's like sci-fi. No one ever completely dies. So what about Chris Evans' Captain America?
'I could do this all day'
There is also the multiverse as a possibility for the Evans version of Captain America to return. Between the Disney+ "Loki" series and the film "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," we've broken the multiverse wide open. There are different versions of characters, and many of them look exactly the same as they do in Earth-616, like Doctor Strange, Christine Palmer, Baron Mordo, and Wanda Maximoff. While most of us probably don't want to see a version of Evan's Cap who actually means it when he says, "Hail Hydra," he'd probably be saving the world in any version of the multiverse.
We also have time travel, as we saw in "Avengers: Endgame," and that's another way he could come back, despite the fact that he got his happy ending with Peggy. How great would it be to see Captain Carter, Mackie's Cap, and Evan's Cap all fighting in the same battle? There are a lot of ways to do this. Of course, there is something to be said for a beautiful ending, and that's what Evans got for his version of Cap.
The big issue for a return, though, is the actor's willingness to do it. One can definitely understand why Chris Evans wouldn't want to ruin a perfectly good arc. Forget good. Scratch that. I mean to say, absolutely beautiful arc that still makes me cry during every rewatch. So, would Evans come back?
'A tall order'
It doesn't seem likely, friends. While out promoting the new film "Lightyear" in which Evans voices the role of Buzz Lightyear, the character that the toy of the same name in the "Toy Story" films is based on, he was asked about it by Phase Zero (via The Playlist). It was mentioned that a story about returning the Infinity Stones would be something the interviewer (and fans) would like to see. Evans said:
"Yeah, that seems to be something that people would like to see. I don't want to disappoint anybody, but I just don't know if — you know, it's tough. It was such a good run and I'm so happy with it, you know, it's so precious to me. It would have to be perfect."
The interviewer says, "It's got to be scary to think about." Evans responded, "It just would be scary to, you know, addle something that is, again, so — oh, so dear to me, and that role means so much to me. So, to revisit it — it would be a tall order."
Never say never, but that doesn't sound promising. Whether we get more Evans Cap or not though, he's given us years of wonderful content, and we have so much more to come with Anthony Mackie's Cap. The MCU will go on.
